1- MISS BUTCHER is a South Korean thriller given some international coverage by its release on Amazon Prime, although the lack of big name stars may work against it. The story adopts a murder mystery template in the tale of a series of doctors whose butchered bodies begin turning up in the streets. Suspicion soon turns to a female butcher working in the area, and the chief detective finds himself getting close to her. This is a film written with a feminist focus and it reminded me in format of the early work of Park Chan-wook, although it’s not quite as confident or assured. There are some bloody moments and graphic content here, although the story satisfies overall.

2- This is the most offensive Korean offering I have ever seen. It concerns the deaths of doctors who assaulted a sixteen year old paralysed girl whilst she was seemingly unconscious. These scenes are unnecessarily explicit – but – as usual – nobody sees the male genitalia. Camera shots focus on female breasts – clothed and unclothed with lascivious intent. The police leader notices a butcher shop with a female owner but doesn’t seem bright enough to suspect her. The investigation stumbles on with little success – it seems a fit man can’t even catch up with a woman he’s chasing and the usual obstructions conveniently appear to allow her to get away. I found this film offensive and a weak attempt to follow Western soft porn – I am not surprised there are no big names in it. I also wonder why the character Dong Moo (police officer)does not appear anywhere in the credits. In this case it is probably better for his career not to.
